Neurosis
The word literally means an illness of the nerves, and was coined by Freud to describe the unhappiness of the patients who came to see him.


He famously remarked that ‘Neurotics are troubled by memory’. His work focused on bringing memory into consciousness so that the negative illusions of the neurotic condition could be reduced.
