This hybrid approach attempts to bridge the gap between the intrapsychic and interpersonal schools of thought.
Neither is a mere 'object' to the other. It holds that each of us enters any relationship with a complex personal subjectivity. Thus we ought not to take others at face value, and we should recognize that our own responses to others are affected by our own issues. A corollary is that within a therapy, the therapist must take into account the way in which his or her own subjectivity influences the way in which he or she responds professionally to the client.
